Hydrogen sulfide, potassium phosphite and zinc sulfate as alleviators of drought stress in sunflower plants Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Almeida,Gabriel Martins; Silva,Adinan Alves da; Batista,Priscila Ferreira; Moura,Luciana Minervina de Freitas; Vital,Roberto Gomes; Costa,Alan Carlos.
ABSTRACT Drought is the most harmful environmental factor crop productivity. Some chemicals are used in agriculture to mitigate the damage from this stress on plants. Therefore, we examined whether the spraying of zinc sulfate (ZS), potassium phosphite (KPhi) and the hydrogen sulfide (H2S) donor sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) would mitigate the deleterious effects of water deficit on sunflower plants by analyzing physiological and biometric characteristics. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse using a randomized block design with five replications. The treatments were arranged in a 4 x 2 factorial scheme: [Factor A (Alleviators)] - spraying of KPhi (0.5 L ha-1), ZS (3.2 kg ha-1), NaHS (1.2 g ha-1), and water; [Factor B (substrate humidity, SH)] -...

Identification of reference genes for expression analysis by real-time quantitative PCR in drought-stressed soybean PAB
Stolf-Moreira,Renata; Lemos,Eliana Gertrudes de Macedo; Abdelnoor,Ricardo Vilela; Beneventi,Magda Aparecida; Rolla,Amanda Alves Paiva; Pereira,Selma dos Santos; Oliveira,Maria Cristina Neves de; Nepomuceno,Alexandre Lima; Marcelino-Guimarães,Francismar Corrêa.
The objective of this work was to validate, by quantitative PCR in real time (RT-qPCR), genes to be used as reference in studies of gene expression in soybean in drought-stressed trials. Four genes commonly used in soybean were evaluated: Gmβ-actin, GmGAPDH, GmLectin and GmRNAr18S. Total RNA was extracted from six samples: three from roots in a hydroponic system with different drought intensities (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 minutes of water stress), and three from leaves of plants grown in sand with different soil moistures (15, 5 and 2.5% gravimetric humidity). The raw cycle threshold (Ct) data were analyzed, and the efficiency of each primer was calculated for an overall analysis of the Ct range among the different samples. The GeNorm application was used to...

Identifying water stress-response mechanisms in citrus by in silico transcriptome analysis Genet. Mol. Biol.
Torres,Gisele A.M.; Gimenes,Marcos A.; Rosa Jr.,Vicente E. de; Quecini,Vera.
Water deficit is one of the most critical environmental stresses to which plants are submitted during their life cycle. The evolutionary and economic performance of the plant is affected directly by reducing its survival in the natural environment and its productivity in agriculture. Plants respond to water stress with biochemical and physiological modifications that may be involved in tolerance or adaptation mechanisms. A great number of genes have been identified as transcriptionally regulated for water deficit. EST sequencing projects provide a significant contribution to the discovery of expressed genes. The identification and determination of gene expression patterns is important not only to understand the molecular bases of plant responses but also...

Impacts of drought and temperature stress on coffee physiology and production: a review Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
DaMatta,Fábio M.; Ramalho,José D. Cochicho.
Overall, drought and unfavourable temperatures are the major climatic limitations for coffee production. These limitations are expected to become increasingly important in several coffee growing regions due to the recognized changes in global climate, and also because coffee cultivation has spread towards marginal lands, where water shortage and unfavourable temperatures constitute major constraints to coffee yield. In this review, we examine the impacts of such limitations on the physiology, and consequently on the production of mainly Coffea arabica and C. canephora, which account for about 99 % of the world coffee bean production. The first section deals with climatic factors and the coffee plant’s requirements. The importance of controlling oxidative...

Covre,André Monzoli; Partelli,Fábio Luiz; Bonomo,Robson; Tomaz,Marcelo Antônio; Ramalho,José Cochicho.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the concentrations and accumulation of macronutrients in conilon coffee (Coffea canephora) fruit, and their concentrations in leaves, over two years, in irrigated and nonirrigated coffee plants. Three-year-old conilon coffee plants of the cultivar Emcapa 8111 genotype 02 were used. An experimental design was carried out in randomized complete blocks, in a split-plot arrangement, with 14 replicates. The main plot factor was irrigation versus nonirrigation of coffee plants, and the split-plot factor was different fruit and leaf collection times. Collections began 10 days after the beginning of flowering and were performed on average every 28 days, until full fruit ripening. At each sampling date, five...

Increase in pea productivity associated with irrigation management Horticultura Brasileira
Santos,Osvaldir F; Cunha,Fernando F; Taira,Tiago L; Souza,Epitácio J; Leal,Aguinaldo JF.
ABSTRACT Proper irrigation management is crucial to obtain high yields of pea, since its cultivation is recommended in cold and dry seasons. Taking into account the great genetic diversity, we considered necessary to evaluate cultivars which best adapt to the intrinsic conditions of Cerrado Region, as it presents low fertility soil, long dry period in the winter, drought periods (veranicos) in rainy season, mainly in January and February (summer). Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate adaptability of green-pea cultivars under different irrigation depths in Northeast Region of state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The experiment was installed in a split plot scheme, with four irrigation depths [50, 75, 100 and 125% of crop evapotranspiration (ETc)] and at...

The loss of soybean yield to Brazilian producers because of a water deficit in the 2011-2012 season was 12.9%. To reduce such losses, molecular biology techniques, including plant transformation, can be used to insert genes of interest into conventional soybean cultivars to produce lines that are more tolerant to drought. The abscisic acid (ABA)-independent Dehydration Responsive Element Binding (DREB) gene family has been used to obtain plants with increased tolerance to abiotic stresses. In the present study, the rd29A:AtDREB2A CA gene from Arabidopsis thaliana was inserted into soybean using biolistics. Seventy-eight genetically modified (GM) soybean lines containing 2-17 copies of the AtDREB2A CA gene were produced. Two GM soybean lines (P1397 and...

Isolation of a cotton NADP(H) oxidase homologue induced by drought stress PAB
NEPOMUCENO,ALEXANDRE LIMA; STEWART,JAMES MCD; OOSTERHUIS,DERRICK; TURLEY,RICKIE; NEUMAIER,MORMAN; FARIAS,JOSÉ RENATO BOUÇAS.
The aim of this study was to identify and isolate genes that are differentially expressed in four selected cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) genotypes contrasting according to their tolerance to water deficit. The genotypes studied were Siokra L-23, Stoneville 506, CS 50 and T-1521. Physiological, morphological and developmental changes that confer drought tolerance in plants must have a molecular genetic basis. To identify and isolate the genes, the mRNA Differential Display (DD) technique was used. Messenger RNAs differentially expressed during water deficit were identified, isolated, cloned and sequenced. The cloned transcript A12B15-5, a NADP(H) oxidase homologue, was up regulated only during the water deficit stress and only in Siokra L-23, a drought...

LEAF TEMPERATURE AND TRANSPIRATION OF PEQUI TREES WITH AND WITHOUT WATER RESTRICTION REA
Miranda,Raiane F.; Alves Júnior,José; Casaroli,Derblai; Evangelista,Adão W. P.; Batisti,Rafael.
ABSTRACT The answers to when and how much to irrigate orchards can be obtained based on the measurements of plants' transpiration and leaf temperature. This study aims to determine the leaf temperature and sap flow of the pequi tree (Caryocar brasiliense Camb.), both with and without water restriction. Further, the leaf temperature was measured by infrared thermometry and estimated transpiration using the Granier method, where the thermal dissipation probes are inserted into the plant stems. The experiment was conducted in a 120-plant orchard located in Goiânia-GO, Brazil, from which seven of the plants (3 irrigated and 4 non-irrigated; aged 6.6–7.4 years) were evaluated for eight months (October 2015 to May 2016). The soil was characterized as a...

Leaf water potential, gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence in acariquara seedlings (Minquartia guianensis Aubl.) under water stress and recovery Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Liberato,Maria Astrid Rocha; Gonçalves,José Francisco de Carvalho; Chevreuil,Larissa Ramos; Nina Junior,Adamir da Rocha; Fernandes,Andreia Varmes; Santos Junior,Ulysses Moreira dos.
The physiological performance of acariquara (Minquartia guianensis) seedlings submitted to water deficit and the recovery of physiological parameters during rehydration were investigated in a greenhouse experiment. The analyzed parameters were: leaf water potential, gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence. After thirty-five days, non-irrigated plants exhibited a leaf water potential 70 % lower compared to control plants (irrigated daily) and the stomatal conductance reached values close to zero, inducing a severe decrease in gas exchange (photosynthesis and transpiration). Six days after the beginning of the rehydration of drought-stressed plants, the results demonstrated that water stress did not irreversibly affect gas exchange and quantum efficiency...

Abstract The common bean is characterized by high sensitivity to drought and low productivity. Breeding for drought resistance in this species involves genes of different genetic groups. In this work, we used a SEA 5 x AND 277 cross to map quantitative trait loci associated with drought tolerance in order to assess the factors that determine the magnitude of drought response in common beans. A total of 438 polymorphic markers were used to genotype the F8 mapping population. Phenotyping was done in two greenhouses, one used to simulate drought and the other to simulate irrigated conditions. Fourteen traits associated with drought tolerance were measured to identify the quantitative trait loci (QTLs). The map was constructed with 331 markers that covered all...

NONLINEAR AGROMETEOROLOGICAL MODELS FOR ESTIMATING LYCHEE FRUIT GROWTH Rev. Bras. Frutic.
APARECIDO,LUCAS EDUARDO DE OLIVEIRA; FERREIRA,RAFAEL BIBIANO; ROLIM,GLAUCO DE SOUZA; SOUZA,BIANCA SARZI DE; SOUZA,PAULO SERGIO DE.
ABSTRACT The influence of climate on the development of lychee fruit is complex, but few studies have discussed the problem. We developed agrometeorological models for simulating the development of fruit fresh matter (FM), fruit dry matter (DM), fruit length (LE), fruit diameter (DI), fruit volume (VO), and fruit number per cluster (FN) of the “Bengal” lychee cultivar as functions of climatic conditions. We conducted three analyses: (a) the influence of mean meteorological elements on the rates of fruit growth, (b) estimation of fruit development by the agrometeorological models using sigmoidal adjustments, and (c) simulation of fruit development using multiple nonlinear regression of two meteorological elements to improve the accuracy. A rate of water...
